How We Are Helping Refugees – Feeding Without Judging
‘Calais Light’ organises weekend convoys from Brentwood to Calais to help feed and clothe refugees
Update from Mary Stretch .. See the Photos
“Calais Light” is the name of the refugee action convoy service we have started that runs weekend groups, every 2-3 months to the amazing ‘Help Refugees UK Warehouse in Calais’
The Warehouse is an astonishing place, run by the British charity, Help Refugees UK’s team of about 15 young long-term volunteers. We, along with temporary volunteers from all over Europe help chop vegetables & prep food for 1000 hot vegetarian meals a day for 800 -1000 destitute refugees. These are men of all different nationalities, plus many unaccompanied children & women, all living rough in the woods without food, shelter, water, sanitation, blankets or tents.
We’d love you to join us for a weekend’s volunteering
You don’t have to live in Brentwood – we take anyone with a heart to help, from anywhere in the UK
We offer a robust process & quick information to get everyone there safely & home again but we travel as adults in our right, as if was ‘our’ quick trip to France. WE TAKE PEOPLE, not donations (but you may give .. see below) – because we have realised that that no matter how much money or how many donations are given, FOOD COMES FIRST IN SURVIVAL & MANPOWER IS NEED TO COOK IT.
How it works:
We’ve discovered that actually getting your hands dirty & helping real people changes you. We try to have fun & we do!! The warehouse plays great music, very loud! The trip is totally compatible with work – just ask for a couple of hours off on Friday. We all work. We take anyone, any age, race, denomination from 18-75,as long as they are fit; We’ve taken 75 year old grandmothers & Mums with babies of 6 months, that they’ve left at home with Dad or parents. It’s a DECISION TO HELP! The work is 9-5.30 pm & tough but there is no heavy supervision. You can sit down and rest for as long as you like. The warehouse works with “gentle organisation”
We leave Brentwood Cathedral in Essex car park at 12 midday prompt & return around 8pm Sunday evening. We share cars, 5 to a car. If you have a car – we’d love to have you because that’s what we need: Drivers!
We book everything:
The total cost is c. £75 to cover petrol, P&O Ferry, 2 nights accommodation in a very nice youth hostel, right near the wonderful Calais beach (much better than UK ones: shared twin room with your own shared ensuite), all meals, including a really fun restaurant meal together on Sat night. Friday night meal & Sunday ferry snacks are your responsibility. But we generally go to the same restaurant both nights. Your choice.
Please help. Please go there, weekdays on your own when Help Refugees UK are desperate for volunteers in their amazing warehouse. It’s so easy! Take your mates!
